World Summit on GMO-Free Diversity in Bonn (Germany), 12-16 May 2008:

"We, the participants of the 3rd Conference of GMO-Free Regions in Europe invite the farmers, gardeners and consumers of the world to celebrate the diversity of our seed and food and cultures and their freedom from GMOs, patents and corporate control... We call upon organisations, communities and institutions from around the world to join us in organising this event and to contribute to its program. Let us join forces for the freedom of seed and reproduction and the freedom from GMOs and patents on life. Let us also make our message be heard [by] the representatives of governments as well [all] the people of the world."

Thanks for posting this. What Monsanto does is horrifying. When we campaigned against GMO crops starting some 12-15 years ago, this was already discussed - if they get patents on plants, then animals are not far behind. And then, of course, they will want to patent humans as well.

There is a big anti-GMO conference in Bonn starting May 12, with several speakers from Japan's No! GMO Campaign and Consumers Union of Japan. Do send them a thought.

It's the tiny things that make the world move...

Thanks for adding the quote and the link.

Genetic/living material should not be subject to "ownership" or patents.

I'll continue to use only heirloom seeds for planting and refuse to knowingly buy genetically engineered food in any form.

I don't think the American public realizes what is at stake, how corporations such as this are quietly taking over everything -- just like those buying up water rights.

joared, you are so right. The politics behind taking over DNA and H2O is indeed identical. What is next, the air we breathe? The right to reproduce?

But it is not done so quietly, and a lot of people are in fact protesting.
