THE TALE OF DOKONJO DAIKON

I've always loved daikon; as a vegetable it is very impressive of course, but it is also multiply delicious, whether grated, sliced, grilled, raw or as an ingredient in oden, and it makes a great range of pickles, among other of its uses. But seldom has a root vegetable been so honored as this stalwart individual in the small town of Aoi...

What a lovely little story. It's heartening to hear how the whole community respects its roots.

In my town, the only thing that gets this kind of attention is national football championships.

Football is a great game to play, but a stalwart radish has its place, too. Too bad you can't have both... As for me, I don't mind at all having just the radish...
