BLACK RASPBERRY FOR GODSAKE! CHOCOLATE WALNUT! ALMOND JOY! BUTTER ALMOND CRUNCH! BY THE QUART!! WHERE IS THE MERCY IN THIS WORLD?

Butter pecan! Maple walnut! Pistachio!
And there at the bottom, where it belongs,
Vanilla
.

In a recent post I lamented one of my recurring luxury laments about the overall vanillaness of the ice cream and other sectors of choice here, and in a comment Pam linked to the above flickr photo of hers, where a genuine range of flavor choice is clearly displayed and dealt with by clients without dissolving into the ice cream shop floor. In the comment Pam casually adds that the other ice cream place has 75 flavors. Those folks know how to make choices. I used to do that too. I look forward to the coming nightmares.

PS: Am I hallucinating already? Does that say about 500 yen (in dollars) per quart, tax included? It's about $3.50 for a shot glass of Haaaagen Daeazsz vanilla here...

I will return to this scripture many times until I have mastered its profound truths and made them my own, perhaps even one day as calories...

Well, it's $5.20 for a quart of soft serve, $6.20 for a quart of hard ice cream. The small size serving is $2.00 here. It's probably about twice the size of the "regular" Japanese ice cream serving. I always order a kid's size and it's plenty of ice cream and costs a whopping $1.50.

Those mysteriously named flavors are so intriguing-- Maine Tracks, Survivor, Tornado. Ginger ice cream! I've gotta give that a try sometime. I hear the blueberry frappes are to die for but I never seem to move past the cup of regular ice cream.

Did you notice the list of flavors only takes up the lower left corner the actual menu board? The rest of it is all more advanced ice cream creations.

I think I moved back here in part for the summer ice cream shops! (Yeah, that and the 7 months of winter a year.)

Ah, but the Japanese have lots of interesting ice cream flavors, like Horse flesh, Chicken Wing, Crab, Cactus, Eel, Fish, Octopus, Shrimp, Wasabi, and Soy Sauce.

With choices like that, it's no wonder they mostly stick to vanilla.
