Touching, troubling story. Makes me want to be extra, extra careful when I gather caption information for my own photos.

What a gripping story. Such detail. I am reminded of the National Geographic magazine cover photo of the Afghani girl with the astounding eyes (Sharbat Gula) but this one is so well documented its easier to relate to. Thanks Bob.

Actually many times when I have seen this photo I have wondered what happened to this everywoman. Wow!

Me too. I have several books of depression era photos and there are a certain few in there that always set me musing as to who these people were, what became of them and their families. For me, this unnamed and unforgettable woman became an icon of that time and its trials. It is good to know that the strength she shows in this portrait brought her to comfort at last... I've just added another link, to the only photo I can find of her in her later years, with the two girls, now grown...

Thanks for sharing this story. Am glad the photo had some positive impact benefiting some people in need. The photo and surrounding documentation provided by the photographer give rise to our questioning what we see. I think of the WWII picture of the flag being raised on Iwo Jima and the true story surrounding that event.
