YEAH, I KNOW.

Yeah I know. The old margarine/butter controversy... Though there seem to be fewer clear arteries on the margarine side these days... Still, here's an excerpt from a great take on the oleaginopolemic:

Effects of Margarine on Health

  • Margarine triples the risk of coronary heart disease.
  • Margarine increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol).
  • Margarine Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.
  • Lowers quality of breast milk.
  • Decreases immune response.
  • Decreases insulin response.
  • Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC.
I like that last one.

We alternate between a cholesterol lowering spread and the real thing...butter. Thus we will only die half as early.

I'm mostly an olive oil guy myself, some butter in winter and on pancakes forever-- some things just seem to go hand-in-hand with life... mine, anyway.

Yikes! One molecule away from PLASTIC??? Now, that's appetizing.

I wonder if you are including the new ones that are made from non-hydrogenated, non-trans-fat oils?

You can make a great spread by taking a pound of butter and softening it and then beating in as much light or extra virgin olive oil as it will take (with an electric hand mixer.) Store it in the fridge in a tub and you have something with half the cholesteral that tastes pretty good and is spreadable. It's what I used to make for my family.
